A little bit about me

Sarah van den Brink

I believe in addressing problems at the root. I will approach you as an individual with challenges, difficulties and a history that are unique to you. Therapy can be an extremely hard and painful process at times, but the result is a real and enduring improvement in your mood and your relationships. In my experience, therapies which offer to quickly fix symptoms, such as depression or anxiety, rarely result in long term benefits.

My approach has been honed through working in the NHS and private practice. I am an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society, a title awarded to me in recognition of my years of experience and contribution to the field of psychology. I am also registered and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council.

The cost for a 50 minute session is £75.

I am registered with the following insurers: BUPA, AXA PPP Healthcare, PruHealth, Aviva, WPA.

Some benefits

Psychological distress is not like a physical ailment or disease. It is not an infection which can be treated with a course of antibiotics, rather it is a reaction to your life circumstances past and present. Similarly, it is important to understand that therapy will not "cure" you; there is no magic pill to eradicate feelings of anxiety and distress. Everyone experiences painful feelings from time to time. However, these feelings need not be debilitating. Therapy can make your feelings more manageable and help you to think and act in ways that make you feel better and more fulfilled.

Based on my experience and the research evidence, I believe that therapy is at its most effective when we meet every week at a regular time.

What to expect from the first meeting

I always suggest that we meet for a 50 minute preliminary meeting before you decide whether you'd like to commit to therapy with me. I firmly believe, and the research evidence supports this, that successful therapy depends on the relationship between us. An initial meeting will give you an idea of how I work and whether you think that I am the right person to help you at this point.

Our first meeting is an opportunity for us to think together about the issues you would like to work on and what you might hope to achieve as a result of therapy. I will want to find out why you have come to therapy at this particularly point in your life and I will talk to you, amongst other things, about your childhood history, your relationships, employment situation and your support network.

The initial session should give us both a feel for whether we would like to work together. Sometimes a further session is required, sometimes I might suggest that another professional is more appropriate to meet your needs.
